Dakota McMurray

Health Security Division Chief, Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Office of the Chief Medical Officer

CDR Dakota McMurray, PharmD, PhD, MPH, BCPS, is the Health Security Division Chief at Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Office of the Chief Medical Officer, overseeing both the public health and medical intelligence branches. A member of the United States Public Health Service, CDR McMurray is pivotal in managing and tracking infectious diseases of public health significance that affect both the CBP workforce and persons in custody. He began his career as a pharmacy resident with the Indian Health Service (IHS) in Crownpoint, NM, in June 2013. 

After completing his residency, he was promoted to Advanced Practice Pharmacist at IHS, where he significantly contributed to advancing the pharmacy residency program and later became the residency director. In 2017, he transitioned to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as the Senior Public Health Analyst, overseeing infectious disease management in the migrant detention setting and leading the HIV care team. In 2020, CDR McMurray joined CBP, becoming the inaugural public health professional for the agency and has been instrumental in developing public health policies and practices. Originally from South Carolina, he earned a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from the University of South Carolina in 2013, a Master of Public Health (MPH) from Walden University in 2016, and a PhD in Public Health with a concentration in Epidemiology from Walden University in 2020. He is a Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) from the Board of Pharmacy Specialties. Throughout his career, CDR McMurray has demonstrated a commitment to integrating pharmacy and public health to enhance community and institutional health outcomes. His leadership and expertise continue to contribute significantly to public health security and policy development at a national and international level.
