Webinar: Health Empowerment for Black, Brown, and LGBTQ+ Communities

Webinar Description: HIV is a major public health crisis, often seen disproportionately in underrepresented, minority communities, such as Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ communities. In this course, P.J. Moton-Poole discusses the intersection of public health and social work to empower the myriad of under-represented communities. He explores racism and homophobia within these communities as toxic barriers to health equity.
P.J. highlights the need to appreciate HIV beyond the virus in the body, focusing on the social determinants of health to treat people as a whole. He further delves into tokenism and the model of meaningful engagement in public health research and implementation.

Webinar: Amplifying Social Justice: Becoming Allies, Advocates, and Activists Workshop

Webinar Description: Just what exactly is the difference between allyship, advocacy, and activism? How do we differentiate between the actions of changing our facebook photos to signposts that proclaim “Black Lives Matter”, speaking up for a transgender individual who has been misgendered in a workplace or social setting, deciding not to engage in disability inspiration ‘porn’, drafting a policy memo articulating the injustices suffered by specific refugee groups, or even testifying before Congress on the environmental atrocities committed by multinational companies? Amplifying Social Justice: Becoming Allies, Advocates, and Activists peels back these layers to discern differences in how individuals can work to promote social justice and equity in a variety of ways. Students will engage in both self-reflection and self-awareness activities, learning some differential strategies and tactics for identifying structural oppression and injustice, as well as techniques for promoting social justice, from community organizing and policy advocacy, to grassroots activism and professional activism.
Webinar: The Great Health Debates: Does Drug Decriminalization Help or Harm Communities?
Webinar Description: Substance abuse is one of the major public health problems, rife with abundant controversies regarding how to mitigate versus completely eradicate its, and its attendant consequences of society. A crucial point of contention is: does decriminalizing drugs help or harm communities? In this course, Dr Monty Ghosh and Dr. Tracy Pearson debate the concept of drug decriminalization, its challenges, and benefits.
A distinction is drawn between diversion and true decriminalization as well as legalized regulation. Addiction is portrayed as a health issue, similar to other chronic medical conditions and rooted in the dysfunction of the biological. The declaration of “war on drugs” is noted to be essentially a “war on users”. The need for resources – financial, infrastructure and human — is highlighted as key in the process of decriminalization of drugs.

Webinar Description: In this webinar, participants will explore disparities that impact the LGBTQ+ community. Participants will examine the impact of social determinants of health on the LGBTQ+ community, including lack of cultural competence from providers, loss of social support, violence, homelessness, limited access to healthcare, and discrimination.
Students will gain an understanding of the importance of cultural competence and language associated with the LGBTQ+ identity.

Webinar Description: The advent of HIV antiretroviral medications in the mid-1990s drastically reduced HIV-related deaths, and helped transform the disease into a manageable condition. What these medications could not treat, however, was stigma. Attitudes, and laws, rooted in ongoing fears around HIV persist to this day. In 2023, 34 states have laws that criminalize HIV exposure. Why do these laws continue to exist, and how are they meant to protect the health and well-being of the public?

High inequities and social injustice exist with access to surgery, leading to increased morbidity and mortality, and catastrophic health expenditures. In this course, Siddhesh Zadey discusses Global Surgery, an integral aspect of Global Health, to mitigate the problems associated with surgical access and consequences.
He delves into current global surgery models, challenges, limitations, and solutions. He also discusses systems modeling and its impact on public health. The need to move beyond publication of research towards implementation is also elaborated upon.
