With a professional background rooted in frontline healthcare provision, Fizza Gilani, transitioned into a regulatory capacity, advocating for health promotion at a systemic level. Over the years, Fizza has assumed progressive leadership positions, tackling complex healthcare challenges within Alberta. Notable contributions include spearheading responses to the Opioid Crisis as the program manager for the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, implementing policy changes and leveraging pharmacist expertise to develop harm-reduction focused clinical guidelines. Fizza has also played a pivotal role in advancing anti-racism efforts, serving as a steering committee member for a Microaggressions in Healthcare training course tailored for physicians in leadership positions. Recognized for advocacy, she mentors through organizations like the Edmonton Region Immigrant Employment Council. Fizza’s work, including peer-reviewed publications and media features, highlights her contributions to health equity, practice quality and patient safety. Completing a Master’s of Public Health from Harvard Chan solidified Fizza’s commitment to leveraging epidemiology, data, and informatics for systemic change. During her tenure, she served as President of the Canadian Health Student Club and Vice President for the MPH cohort of 2023, while also obtaining a certificate in Public Health Leadership. Her experiences have deepened her resolve to drive policy changes that address systemic biases, improve healthcare access, combat vaccine-preventable diseases, and enhance outcomes for underserved communities.
