Hawa Abu

Assistant Professor,

University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School

Hawa Abu, MD, PhD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. Her doctoral dissertation utilized the Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Model to examine the influence of religious and spiritual practices on health outcomes among survivors of an acute syndrome. This work laid the foundation for her current research which seeks to promote holistic engagement of older adults with multiple chronic conditions in shared decision-making through the lens of social justice by ensuring that older adults receive care that is respectful, inclusive, and aligned with their values. She is particularly interested in the role of faith, spirituality, and religiosity in coping with the burden of multimorbidity and integrating these factors into holistic patient care. Through her funded research grants, Dr. Abu explores how health beliefs, trust in physicians, religious/spiritual beliefs and practices influence anticoagulation use for stroke prevention among older adults with atrial fibrillation and multimorbidity. Also, with her Career Development KL2 Award from UMASS Chan, she aims to enhance patient, caregiver, and clinician engagement in shared decision-making for stroke prevention, aligning care decisions with the priorities, values, and goals of older adults with multimorbidity using the Patient Priorities Care approach. She actively participates in the UMass Aging Research Group to foster transdisciplinary collaboration and advance innovative research initiatives aimed at improving the health and well-being of older adults.
