Dr. Dominique Chao, PsyD

Rehabilitation Neuropsychologist and Assistant Professor, University of Colorado School of Medicine

Dr. Dominique (Dom) Chao, PsyD, is a first-generation immigrant and rehabilitation neuropsychologist who serves as an assistant professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. They have built and now direct multiple innovative rehabilitation psychology and neuropsychology service lines for individuals navigating illness, injury, and disability, expanding equitable access to care for those with complex medical and neurological conditions. Beyond clinical innovation, Dr. Chao has led statewide workforce development initiatives and developed asynchronous training curricula for rural providers, strengthening access to evidence-based, culturally responsive neuropsychiatric care for historically underserved communities. Nationally, they hold elected leadership roles within the American Psychological Association, where they advocate for systemic change in workforce equity, training standards, and culturally responsive clinical guidelines. A dedicated scholar and national educator, Dr. Chao advances a vision of rehabilitation that centers dignity, autonomy, and full participation in community life. Through research and national education, they elevate sometimes-overlooked aspects of patient care—including intimacy, identity, and cognition—translating evidence into affirming, practical guidance that de-stigmatizes disability and advances meaningful quality-of-life outcomes. Equally dedicated to education, they teach and mentor the next generation of public health leaders, championing a biopsychosocial and culturally responsive approach to clinical care, and have strengthened equity in doctoral training by adapting curriculum to support disability access and launching new coursework examining neurobiological contributors to clinical presentation, broadening inclusion in health-professional education.
