Dr. Rachael Piltch-Loeb

Assistant Professor, CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy

Dr. Rachael Piltch-Loeb is an Assistant Professor at the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy. She maintains an appointment with the Emergency Preparedness Research Evaluation and Practice Program (EPREP) at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. Her work focuses on research, measurement, and evaluation of public health emergency preparedness and response, and how to more effectively engage the public during public health emergencies. Her research includes emergencies related to extreme weather events, such as pathogens and natural disasters, as well as environmental hazards and manmade disasters. Although diverse in nature, such events have similar research goals in common, such as understanding what segments of the population are most vulnerable to the threat, and how specific agencies and systems can work together to prepare for and respond to these events to protect health and wellbeing. Implementing findings from this research can help improve the response for future emergencies. Dr. Piltch-Loeb’s publications, many co-authored with students and practitioners, include outlining measurement frameworks to improve public health emergency preparedness, cross-jurisdictional after-action reviews to identify lessons learned from emergency response, tools for community engagement in preparedness and response, and assessment of misinformation and communication campaigns. She hopes to improve emergency preparedness, response, and recovery for all populations, by finding ways all people can better address individual and community level crises. Her work has been featured in a variety of news publications such as The New York Times, BBC, National Geographic, The Atlantic, and Business Insider. Dr. Piltch-Loeb is also the author of The Millennial Caregiver, a book inspired by her family’s experience supporting her dad, who was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s Disease.
